César Gaviria, a former President of Colombia who played a pivotal role in the fight against drug trafficking and in bringing Pablo Escobar to justice, has died at the age of 82. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.
Gaviria's Legacy in the War on Drugs
Gaviria served as President from 1990 to 1994, during a time when Colombia was grappling with the violent reign of drug lord Pablo Escobar. Gaviria implemented a tough crackdown on the Medellín Cartel, led by Escobar, and orchestrated the controversial extradition of Escobar to the United States. This extradition led to Escobar's death in a police shootout in 1993.
